MADISON, Wis. - A 20-year-old Madison woman was scammed Monday out of $2,000 by someone claiming to be with the IRS, according to a release.

The woman received a call and was told to stay on the phone or a warrant would be issued for her arrest, police said.

The scammer kept the woman on the phone for almost three hours, according to the release.

The scammer told the woman she owed around $9,000 in taxes from a student loan, police said. He had her use a credit card to buy four $500 Google Play gift cards from Best Buy. He then had her give him the cards’ access codes.
