JANESVILLE, WI - Janesville police Officer Jose Torres has resigned from the department following a drunken driving arrest Monday, says Chief David Moore.

Torres, who was still working as a probationary officer 11 months into his contract, had already been placed on administrative leave last week for failing to show up to work.

"His police privileges were taken away from him and we were working through to consider his termination," Moore said.

Shortly before 9 a.m. on Monday morning, Torres was arrested after crashing his car into a pole near the intersection of Afton Street. and Crosby Avenue.

Moore said Torres blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit, and he had his child in the car at the time. Moore says the department is now working to get Torres help.

“One of the things we talked about was the fact, that yes, we have a business side to this decision but we’re also concerned about you as an employee and we tried to get him connected to as many resources as we could," Moore said.

Moore said the department was planning on firing Torres had he not chosen to resign.
