ST. IGNACE, Mich. - Winds blowing at or above 50 miles per hour caused Mackinac Bridge Authority to partially close the bridge Sunday, officials said on their website.

The bridge that typically enables travelers to pass over the Straits of Mackinac has been closed to all vehicles except passenger cars, passenger vans and empty pickup trucks, authorities said.

Motorists permitted to travel across are advised to reduce speeds to 20 miles per hour and to be prepared to stop.

Authorities said bridge personnel are stationed at both ends of the bridge to provide instructions to drivers. Additional steps will be implemented if conditions change.

Officials suggest drivers planning to travel the Straits area tune into AM radio 530 or 1610 for the latest on bridge conditions
