The Merrimac Ferry, which crosses the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties, is temporarily closed due to high winds Saturday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The ferry, which is officially open for the season, typically shuttles Highway 113 traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week, between Okee on the east bank and Merrimac on the west bank

Officials said the ferry and both northbound and southbound lanes of WIS 113 closed around 1 p.m. today.

Drivers can look for warning signs on highways 113, 60, 19 and 78 to know if the ferry is operating or if they need to change routes.

The closure was expected to last more than two hours.
