MPD mourning sudden death of former lieutenant

MADISON, Wis. - The Madison Police Department is mourning after the death of one of its former officers.

According to Chief Mike Koval's blog, Lt. June Goehler, an 18-year veteran of the department, unexpectedly passed away on June 7 after falling ill.

Besides being a member of the department, Goehler also served as instructor at Madison College, ITT Technical College and Upper Iowa University.

She was very committed to bringing more women into the field of policing. She had served as president and was an active member of the Wisconsin Association of Women Police.

During her 18-year career, she received MPD's "Outstanding Service Award" in 2010 and 2012. Goehler also received the "Innovation in American Government Award" from Harvard University for her work with the MPD Cyber Safety Committee.

Goehler will be laid to rest following a full honor guard ceremony on Wednesday.

Officers mourning badges have been displayed and will be worn until sunset on Saturday.
