MADISON, Wis. — The Henry Vilas Zoo is welcoming its newest resident, a 600-pound male polar bear!
Borealis, or Bo for short, arrived in Madison last week from the Toledo Zoo. He spent Wednesday morning exploring his new home in the Arctic Passage exhibit.
He’ll share the space with the zoo’s female bear, Berit.
Bo is replacing Nuniq, a male polar bear who spent two years in Madison before being transferred to the Kansas City Zoo last month.
Bo was brought to the Henry Vilas Zoo on the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. There are currently only 57 polar bears in zoos in the United States due to the strict animal care standards that must be met.
Bo will turn two-years-old in December.
