FOX47 NEWS - Winterfest Comes to Downtown Madison
Capitol Square was transformed this weekend, into a cross country ski venue. Skiers from across the state to take over the roads, that were intentionally left unplowed after Saturday mornings snowfall.
The winter festival has grown considerably since it started a few years ago. With new family-friendly activities like the snow tubing hill, the most popular event remains, the elite skiing. High school skiiers and kids also took their turn around the square, which for the first time has real snow falling from the sky and already on the ground, adding to the atmosphere.
New this year, the first ever snow sculpting competition at the event. Dave Andrews is no stranger to snow sculpting, he's making an octopus who is trying to lift a treasure chest off the ocean floor. The Madison native, along with his brother Chris and cousin Scott Pauli split up to compete against each other and one other team for this event. But together, they're the defending national snow sculpting champs.
This event it unique, it's the only place in North America that it's done. The Cross Country events will be going on all day Sunday, too. The supertour sprints and high school championships being are Sunday morning with open events going on throughout the day.
