FOX47 NEWS - Inmate Commits Suicide in Prison
The former UW student who pleaded guilty to killing Madison activist Joel Marino last January killed himself in his prison cell late last night.
Dodge County authorities say Adam Peterson apparently hanged himself in his cell at the Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun. A cellmate found him and Peterson was pronounced dead at the prison by paramedics at 10:21 p.m. Saturday.
Peterson was facing a mandatory life sentence with a chance for parole in 20 years.
He pleaded guilty in December to the stabbing death of Joel Marino. Marino was found dead outside his home off Monona Bay last january.
Peterson's suicide came as a bizarre surprise to Joel Marino's parents.
[It's] hard to process a lot of this type of thing all at once, but as far as I'm concerned, he got just what he deserved, said Lou Marino. It never brings my son back, never will. We miss him.
For months, Lou Marino said he'd been trying to get justice for his son by preparing arguments for Peterson's February 26th sentencing. He says he wanted to make sure a judge did not grant Peterson early parole.
It added a lot of stress to my life again because I wanted to make darn sure it wasn't something silly like 20 years, he said.
Now, those concerns are moot. Lou Marino will never get the chance to face his son's killer. He and his wife say they want to focus on celebrating Joel's life and memory.
He wasn't just a great human being. To lose him like that is something that we will never get over.
Lou and Debbie Marino say more benefits in Joel's name are already in the works. They're planning on another golf memorial, and concerts to benefit the Joel Marino music fund.
