FOX47 NEWS - Drunk Driving Crash Benefit
A Janesville family is struggling to recover after a car accident involving a drunk driving sent two people to the hospital.
Now, the community is helping them get back on their feet.
As they shuffled through the pictures of the accident scene, some were amazed anyone could have survived.
I saw pictures of the van -- what I looked like when I was in there and when I got out -- it didn't even look like me, said Josh Krueger.
On November 2, 2008, he and his girlfriend rachel Randell were hit by a drunk driver on Highway 51, just south of Janesville.
We had a car accident and I don't really remember to much about it, Krueger said. The one guy hit us, then I got Med Flighted, went to Rockford.
The first time we saw Josh -- it didn't look like him, said Jerrie McCarty, Josh's cousin. It was very emotional. We were all crying very hard. We didn't think he was going to make it, nor did the doctors.
Josh spent the next 3 weeks in a coma, then underwent several surgeries to repair his broken body.
Three months later, he's surrounded by family and friends at a fundraiser in his honor. Dozens of people and business donated raffle items to help he and his four children buy a new car, and pay the bills while he recovers.
His family also talked about the irony of hosting the benefit at a local bar.
It's changed a lot of our minds, McCarty said. Even though it's at a bar, things have really changed. We've talked about designated drivers. We do have people here that are willing to stay sober, and give people rides.
