MADISON (WMSN) -- Nearly 500,000 people are living without health insurance in Wisconsin, leaving many with few options for help.
The hope is to help more people like Guy Ganta, who says without the help from doctors who volunteer at the BSP Free Clinic, he would not be alive today.
"I would say coming here, it was like coming to heaven," said Guy Ganta, patient.
Guy Ganta of Marshall says for years - he didn't know why he didn't feel well.
Without insurance and running out of options, he discovered the BSP Free Clinic last June, which stands for Benevolent Specialists Project.
Located at the Dean Foundation in Middleton where a doctor diagnosed him.
"I had congestive heart failure and the root cause of it was my sleep apnea. Because of sleeping sitting up for 20 years, my heart was working overtime trying to pump down my legs," said Ganta.
Guy was given a special device to help him sleep, and prescribed medications to get his health back in order.
"Since then I've lost 100 pounds," said Ganta.
It's stories like these that keep many doctors like Psychiatrist Leslie Taylor coming back to the free clinic to volunteer.
This is the only multi-specialty free clinic in the state, meaning patients can be seen by anyone from and optometrist to orthopedic surgeon.
More than 30 doctors from Madison-area hospitals and clinics volunteer.
The BSP Free Clinic served more than 1,300 patients last year. To help serve more patients they're holding a fundraiser April 30th
"It features physicians from all over the area that play instruments," said Dr. Leslie Taylor, Executive Director of the Dean Foundation.
Artwork and jewelry will also be auctioned off.
For Guy, he's thankful for all the help.
"I never experienced someone who'd work a full-time job and come help people out of the kindness of their hearts," said Ganta.
