FOX 47 - Health News

MADISON (WMSN) -- Today's winter blast is kicking up some headaches out on the roads, and injuries are starting to pile up in the ER.

Fox 47 News ventured outside, to find out how today went at the St. Mary's Hospital ER.

"I was trying to move a car out of the parking lot and then the next thing you know my knee popped and fell and hit the ground," said St. Mary's patient Rick Gray.

Rick Gray lost his battle with the snow this morning.

The next few weeks he's going to navigate through it on crutches because of a dislocated knee.

"That was the third car I helped get out of the parking lot - unfortunately that was the last," said patient Rick Gray.

It wasn't easy for the staff to get to work this morning. One nurse hopped on her snowmobile to get there.

"We don't get snow days, we have to be here," said Jody Weiss, St. Mary's ER Nurse.

To help patients like Rick who otherwise wouldn't have had anyplace to go.

"We get a lot of snow blower injuries with people trying to clear out the snow with stuck ice in the shoot," said Dr. Kip Kircher, St. Mary's Hospital.

Dr. Kip Kircher says finger injuries and amputations are most common after huge winter blasts, along with people blowing their backs out.

"After you've had a chance for your body to rest you can feel more pain," said Dr. Kircher.

He says you should drink lots of water, and stay active after the storms. As for Rick, he's going to sit the next one out.

"Wait for them to clear your packing lot before you go out and start pushing cars around, it was very slippery and have some help with you," said Rick.

"If you're feeling tired you really need to slow down, the snow can wait," said Dr. Kircher.

The doctor adds what we need to be concerned about next is frostbite. With the wind chill at -20 degrees in some places Wednesday night, it only takes about 10 minutes for frostbite to set in.

Make sure you cover every part of your body if you venture outside especially your head.
