Wednesday, November 3 2010, 09:44 PM CDT MADISON (WMSN) -- If you're trying to lose weight before the new year, simply heading to your kitchen faucet may do the trick.

A nutritionist at Dean Clinic in Madison says drinking 8 glasses of water a day (or 64 ounces) will help you lose more weight.

She says it's because it makes you feel fuller, faster.

"Counting calories and watching what you eat may not be as hard if you decide to drink much more of this. It's definitely a method people can use for portion control. By drinking prior to eating gives you that sense of fullness," said Toni Sterry, Dean Clinic registered dietitian.

That "full" feeling is what all of us are looking for, and for some, a little too much.

Physician Assistant Steve Heuer lives by what he preaches to his patients in the weight management program.

He says in the two years he's drank the recommended 8 glasses of water a day. He lost 30 pounds.

"My energy, I just feel more alert and in control of my appetite, like most people in the U.S. I was a soda drinker, I'd drink regular soda," said Heuer.

He tells everyone cutting sugary sodas out changed his life.

He hopes more people will realize with portion control, it could change their lives, too.

"If I had a day where I'm really good about drinking water all day long, it's a better day," said Heuer.

The dietitian recommends children drink at least 6 glasses of water a day.

Portland's fluoride debate: Is adding fluoride to drinking water dangerous?

On Wednesday, the city of Portland, Ore., overwhelmingly voted down a proposal to add fluoride to the city’s drinking water. The main reason given by anti-fluoride voters? Concern over adding a potentially dangerous chemical to the city’s natural water. But what does the science say?
