MADISON (WMSN) -- There's a good chance you may know someone who has Parkinson's Disease. It can take over someone's life, but a new class is showing patients the best way to fight back.
Studies show exercise is the single most important thing someone with Parkinson's can do.
"It really is the best answer we got so far with managing Parkinson's," said Bill Walkington.
"My neck hurt when I came in and it doesn't hurt anymore I just feel great like a new man its just amazing," said Bill Russell, who's living with Parkinson's Disease.
58-year-old Bill Russell has lived with Parkinson's for 32 years. He says his life changed forever just 12 weeks ago.
"I can tie my shoes now, I can bend over without falling I used to fall a lot," said Russell.
It's thanks to a free class called PWR! Movement - which stands for Parkinson's wellness recovery movement.
"Some of the people are starting to have stronger strides they're starting to push through their toes with their gate they're not as afraid," said Susan Trier, PWR! Movement Instructor.
"The body figures out ways to do more with less its more efficient and it appears they develop new pathways," said Trier.
Parkinson's Disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system.
Movements are mainly affected with this disease.
Symptoms include shaking, slowness of movement, trouble sleeping and emotional problems.
Bill says he doesn't plan to miss a class.
"Especially this time of year when its cold and you cant walk this is a great program," says Russell.
Right now more than 40 people are taking the classes offered at Harbor Athletic Club in Middleton.
Not just people with Parkinson's are welcome - caregivers are as well so they can go home and teach their loved ones movements they can use at home.
The classes are made possible by the American Parkinson's Disease Association's Wisconsin Chapter.
There is a waiting list for people to get into the classes, to find out how you can help follow this link.
