MADISON, Wis. -A Rewey man was sentenced Tuesday for issuing fraudulent money orders to himself from the Cobb Post Office, according to a state Department of Justice release.

Jason L. Nichols, 30, was sentenced to three years of probation for issuing the money orders, and was ordered to pay restitution of $8,000, officials said. Nichols pleaded guilty to the charge on April 15.

Nichols was the officer-in-charge at the Cobb Post Office from July 2012 until April 25, 2013, according to the release. A comparison of money orders issued between October 2012 and April 25, 2013, revealed at least 70 money orders that were reported as sold on the daily financial record, but were not deposited until weeks later.

On April 25, 2013, Nichols admitted to borrowing money from the post office to pay for personal expenses, officials said. An audit revealed the total loss to the post office was approximately $8,000.
