MADISON, Wis. -The future of Dane County 911 Center Director John Dejung will be decided by the Dane County Board of Supervisors on Thursday, despite a request from the leader of the 911 Center Board to delay the vote.

Maple Bluff Fire Chief Josh Ripp said the 911 Center Board would begin a performance review of Dejung at its meeting tomorrow. It would be its first performance review since 2010.

Ripp said the proposed five-year contract extension for Dejung, whose 911 center has been criticized recently for failing to meet national standards for answering and dispatching emergency calls quickly enough, should wait until the board's review is complete.

"I would hope they would hold off until we're able to get this done," Ripp said. "We've been handling all the other items coming down the line. We'll hammer this out and see how fast we can do this, but I know we're not going to have this done in time for Thursday's board meeting."

Ripp conveyed his feelings to Supervisor Sharon Corrigan, who is the chair of the Dane County Board. She told him while the county welcomed the 911 center board's input on ways to improve public safety, she still planned to hold the vote on Thursday night.

"John Dejung is leading several Dane County projects that will significantly upgrade public safety communication -- completing the new computer aided dispatch implementation, getting interoperable radio communication up and running, and tackling areas where we can continue to improve our 911 communications," Corrigan said in an email to News 3. "I am sure that the board will weigh the progress that Director Dejung has made in improving public safety in Dane County and the future needs of the county when we consider his contract on Thursday, June 26."

The five-year deal, which seeks to pay Dejung $142,833 per year, was unanimously approved last month by the County Board's Personnel and Finance Committee. Dejung's current contract expired earlier this spring.
