LaChapelle is a founding member of Parents for Pot, a national organization
lobbying for the legalization of medical marijuana for children.
"When you begin
working with these parents of children with seizure disorders you realize the
clock is ticking. The next seizure could be the big one that ends the child’s
life," LaChapelle said.
Medical marijuana is
not legal in Wisconsin. It is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
To get medical marijuana for their children, some parents have resorted to
relocating to states where the treatment is legal.
"I get inquiries
on a daily basis of families that are ready to leave Wisconsin,” says LaChapelle.
"They don’t find hope and they need to move their family and they need to
move them fast because their clocks are ticking and there is treatment and hope
just a state or two away."
Charlotte’s Web, a
treatment facility in Colorado, said approximately 100 families have moved
there in the last month to allow their children to be treated with marijuana
oil, an extract from the plants. Those families came from a variety of states
including Minnesota and Texas.
Nine additional states
are considering legislation that would legalize medical marijuana. Two states,
Colorado and Washington State have legalized marijuana for recreational use.
