For June Lemm, climbing aboard a train
in North Freedom is like taking a step back in time
“It's the thrill of something we don't
have anymore of that we missed as young people and kids and the adventure of a
train,” said Lemm.
It’s an adventure with the sights and
sounds echoing from Wisconsin's history. The thrill of the cars clanking
together, clashing and banging.
Since the mid-1900's, passenger trains
fell by the wayside, making preserving their history that much more important.
It’s exactly what people from the Mid-Continental
Railroad Museum are hoping to do. restore a once prominent steam engine.
“Now it's not been in service since
1998,” said Don Mayer, Mid-Continental Railroad Museum. “It had to come out for
repairs, very costly repairs and right now our projected estimate on this for
the final restoration project will be close to 2-million dollars.”
But, to the museum and train lovers
it's about more than just replacing bolts and twisted steel.
“In large part it gives you a touch
with your heritage and what your ancestors experienced when they came over here
and settled the state of Wisconsin,” said Mayer.
It’s an experience that Lemm hopes
will spark interests for generations to come.
“It's just an adventure! The train is
just so exciting and fun.
