MADISON, Wis. -The U.S. Postal Service plans to close four Wisconsin distribution centers, including one in Madison.

The Madison facility is on a consolidation list posted at the Post Office website. A letter to customers posted on the USPS website states the consolidation of 82 facilities nationwide will begin in January 2015 and be completed the following fall. USPS expects 15,000 employees to be affected.

USPS expects the consolidation will generate an additional $750 million in annual savings.

The consolidation is expected to slow delivery times. USPS estimates about 20 percent of first-class mail is expected to be delivered overnight, more than 35 percent is expected to be delivered in two days and about 44 percent delivered in 3 days.

The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reported the facility in Eau Claire employed 110 people in 2011. Its operations will move to a St. Paul, Minn., sorting center.

Wausau Daily Herald Media, meanwhile, reported the postal service plans to close a distribution center in Rothschild next year as well.

That center handles almost all of central Wisconsin's mail. It employed 163 workers in 2012. The postal service says no jobs will be lost. The workers will all be reassigned.

Both media outlets also reports centers in La Crosse and Madison are slated to close as well.
