The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation lawsuit filed in federal court states that Apple used a patented innovation that improves computer chip processing speed and reduces energy consumption in its iPhone 5S, iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display.
The same patent was the subject of a lawsuit against Intel that resulted in a licensing agreement with the company in 2009, according to WARF.
WARF’s general counsel, Michael Falk, said the patent is recognized in the computer field as a major milestone in microprocessing.
The lawsuit filed Friday states that WARF wants a judge to find that Apple infringed on the patent and order Apple to pay damages.
Apple has not responded to a request for comment.
