MADISON (WMSN) -- Despite below zero temperatures, dozens of families braved the cold weather Saturday to make sure they had food to put on the table.

The recession is pushing people to food pantries in record numbers, including at St. Vincent de Paul on Madison's south side.

Just because the holidays are over, doesn't mean the need is too.

For Margaret Brooks of Madison, the pantry frees her from making a difficult choice.

"I have a full-time job, but the money goes to my rent, my utilities, and bills," Brooks said. "So, this is my way of keeping food on the table."

Volunteers are continually trying to keep the warehouse stocked. During Thanksgiving week, 144 families came thru in just one day. During Christmas week, 132 families in only 4 hours.

The year 2010 could be even worse.

"We sometimes see need that excels what we see at the holidays," said Ernie Stetenfeld, community relations. "Yet donations might lag because it's not a time when people are thinking about people struggling with poverty."

For those living that reality every day, it's impossible to forget -- relying on the generosity of others to make it thru the next meal.

"Greatly appreciate it," Brooks said. "Without them, we wouldn't have this opportunity."
