EVANSVILLE (WMSN) -- With declining revenues and rising expenses, many school districts are forced to make difficult cuts, and often times, they will cut maintenance as opposed to books or teachers.

Maintaining the building is hard, though, when parts of it are 90 years old.

Part of what is now the JC McKenna Middle School in Evansville was first built as a Grade school in 1921. In the 30's they built a high school next door, and in the 60's they joined the two together, even though they are not built at the same level.

Parts of the school have seen much better days. The gym is overcrowded, because a second gymnasium blew up in the 70's and was never replaced.

The girls locker room has exposed, corroded pipes and battered lockers.

The steam heat recently exploded in one classroom, spraying 210 degree water into it for much of the weekend, destroying the ceiling, desks, books and supplies.

One of the biggest problems though, is the challenges handicapped students face in the school. Because it is not all at the same level, to get from one end to the other in a wheelchair you need to take two elevators, multiple ramps and several hallways.

Evansville built a new high school in 2002, so in spite of the challenges, they have no plans to go to referendum to ask for funds to build a new school. "Old School" Special Report - JC McKenna Middle School in Evansville
