Coan starts, Northwestern runs past Wisconsin

Jonathan Taylor fumbled twice against the Wildcats. He had 46 yards on 11 carries.

It wasn't pretty at Ryan Field. Northwestern scored 17 points off three Wisconsin fumbles, and the Wildcats beat the Badgers 31-17.

Wisconsin sophomore quarterback Jack Coan made his first career start after Alex Hornibrook was ruled out with a concussion. Coan went 20 of 31 passing for 158 yards and a touchdown to Kendric Pryor.

UW running back Jonathan Taylor had 46 rushing yards on 11 carries, but he also fumbled twice. Garrett Groshek gained 68 yards on seven rushes.

Wildcats quarterback Clayton Thorson threw three interceptions, but he also rushed for two touchdowns. Northwestern has won five of the last six meetings in Evanston.

The loss snaps the Badgers 16-game winning streak over Big Ten west opponents. It drops Wisconsin to 5-3 overall, 3-2 in Big Ten play. Northwestern improves to 5-3, 5-1.
