MADISON, Wis. -- Madison police said an accidental shooting prompted a large law enforcement presence near Jefferson Middle School and Memorial High School Friday afternoon.

Officers were called to the Lussier Community Education Center, located just north of the schools, at around 5:15 p.m.

Police said a 19-year-old man and three other people were sitting in a car when he accidentally shot himself. He was taken to a local hospital and was alert and conscious.

A crowd formed near the scene when officers arrived and one person was taken into custody for allegedly trying to interfere with a criminal investigation.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on a juvenile warrant. Police said the gun used in the incident was not recovered.

The incident remains under investigation and more charges are possible. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.

Madison Metropolitan School District officials said Saturday that the shooting victim was not directly connected with the schools and that there was never a threat to any students, staff or visitors.
