TOWN OF MADISON, Wis. — Local law enforcement are searching for two people after the suspects crashed into a squad car while fleeing police Monday morning.

Officers with the Town of Madison Police Department responded to the area near South Sunnyvale Lane around 5 a.m. for a report of someone shooting out of a vehicle. Officers with the Monona, Fitchburg and Madison police departments and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office set up in the area to watch potential escape routes.

When officers spotted the suspect vehicle, which had been stolen from Janesville, the suspects crashed into a squad car while trying to escape. After the suspect vehicle hit the squad car near North Sunnyvale Lane, both occupants got out and ran off.

Law enforcement tried finding both suspects with the help of a K-9, but they were unsuccessful.

Police said they found a loaded Ruger 10-22 rifle and two loaded 9 mm magazines inside the vehicle. The driver or passenger may still be armed with a handgun, according to a news release.

Authorities also found casings from a .22-caliber rifle in the area.

Around 10 a.m., police were dispatched to an address on Novation Parkway for a report of two people sleeping in a community room. Town of Madison police responded and suspected the two people may have been the ones involved in the shooting.

When they arrived, one suspect was seen running into a wooded area nearby. Authorities tried finding that person with another K-9, but were unsuccessful.

Another suspect, a 17-year-old from Janesville, was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent as a passenger, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of THC, bail jumping and two counts of obstructing.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Town of Madison Police Department at 608-210-7262 or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.
